How to choose the BEST garden plants!

When trying to buy the best plants for your garden, there are several things you need to think about. Firstly, what sort of garden do you want?

A cactus garden will differ wildly from a rose garden. Whilst a herb garden will again have completely different requirements to a vegetable garden.

Assuming you already know the type of garden you desire to have flourish in your yard, we can begin contemplating what will be the best plants to put in there!

The first aspect you need to consider for your garden is the positioning, and more importantly how much sunlight and shade it gets. Not all plants will enjoy constant hot day time sunshine, and therefore will require a position that receives more shade, perhaps near a garden shed which blocks the sun either in the morning or the late afternoon.

Next you need to become familiar with your soil, and in particular the pH levels of the soil. Is your soil waterlogged or well drained? Is it alkaline or acidic? These factors will determine the best plants you can place in your garden.

The best plants may not always be the particular plants you most desire to plant in your garden space. However you must seriously consider your garden environment before purchasing plants, as not all plants will be best suited to your garden conditions and climate.

Another consideration to make is just how many of each plant will you plant in the garden? Usually I prefer to purchase several of the same plant, to keep a more uniformed look. Some people do prefer to have many different plants, and it is entirely up to you. Keep in mind that plants that enjoy sunshine should be placed in the garden position the receives the most sun throughout the course of the day, and shade loving plants need to be located in positions that are perhaps shaded by obstructions or even shade equipment that you can set up yourself.

Before actually digging your plants into the ground, position them on top of the soil first. Believe it or not, the order in which you place your plants can make the world of difference to your garden appearance! Choose colors that compliment each other. Perhaps you will prefer to group plants by color, or mix and match. Again, it is entirely your choice and there are no restrictions! Gardening is like an art - there are no rules and no right and wrong!

Choosing the best plants for your garden boils down to the more technical factors such as soil and shade, as well as simply your own particular plant preferences.
